This was my first visit to Decoy Park with a group of painters. I set off walking around the lake, occasionally stopping to peer through bushes to fishing platforms dotted along the waters edge.
The view that struck me, across the water and into the trees, provided deep mysterious darks that I like to paint and which provide a strong focal point. Black acts as an anchor that often can hold a painting together. Manet was the master of this.
This painting snapped together rather easily, which is not always the way with painting outdoors. Plein air painting is more about the experience and the vital lessons learned during difficult sessions that make it such a valuable exercise - you succeed, or you learn.
